A Lesson from Kobe Bryant: Living With Intention

Rest in Power, Kobe Bean Bryant

Originally this topic, living with intention, wasn’t set to drop until sometime in April. However, with the recent passing of my favorite basketball player ever, Kobe Bean Bryant, I thought this topic to be very fitting. It is inspired by how hard Kobe worked, how determined Kobe was, and the legacy that he left because of it.

For those of you who do not know, I am a die-hard Kobe fan and have been since middle school. I grew up both inspired and amazed at his ability to compete at such a high-level. Kobe was a winner and I never understood how people could dislike a WINNER. He had drive, a killer work ethic, and was confident about his craft. One that he consistently worked to perfect. Kobe didn’t run (team hop) when things got hard. When Kobe was injured, he was fueled by the setback. He knew that every single day he was working towards becoming a better athlete. He worked towards leaving a legacy. He worked towards being the best basketball player in the NBA. Kobe lived with intention!

Live with Intention

Living intentionally is waking up every day with a plan – with a purpose. It’s taking responsibility for yourself and for your life. I talked about being lost in your twenties, but still working towards the big picture. Living with intention isn’t knowing what you want to do, but rather knowing what you want out of life and pushing towards that. Even if you are unsure of your route, you are still showing up as your best self while working towards getting to your better self.

It’s easy for us to live life on auto-pilot. You go to work and do routine tasks – never taking time to learn a new skill. You come home and tend to the household – never taking time to work on the business plan you’ve procrastinated. You “rest” on the weekends – never taking time to plan out your goals for the following week. You let weeks past, months past, years past and you’re in the same position you’ve been in.

Your life can shift in 6 short months when you live with intention. You are no longer just hoping that good things happen to you. You are INTENTIONALLY going after all that you desire. Work hard, remain focused, and stay consistent and you will be rewarded. Kobe was a great example of someone who understood the value of living with intention. Even following his retirement, he was intentional about how he spent time with his family, how he stayed involved with basketball, and how he lived his life!

My hope for you after reading this is that you are inspired to live intentionally and live life unprocessed. This time next year you can either be in the same position or operating at a higher level. It’s up to YOU! You are responsible for your life. Take your foot off the brake and level up! We don’t know when our time will come, but when it does make sure that you are able to say that you achieved all that you desired with the time that you were given.
